Profile - CASCADES S.A.
Commitment to the environment originates from the same source which saw the birth of CASCADES Inc. and which since 1964 has placed the recycling of resources at the centre of its mission.
The production of mechanical pulp at Djupafors is based on the use of wood logs while at La Rochette, this mechanical pulp is produced from wood chips, by-products of saw mills in the region.
The Djupafors and La Rochette mills produce the necessary vapour for their processes, in part from bark combustion which contributes to the optimisation of forest by-products.
In all mills, priority is given to reducing water and energy consumption.
The Blendecques mill has completed a number of innovative projects, having a direct impact on the river Aa, the pride of the region.
Further projects to reduce the use of fresh water are under consideration.
The La Rochelle Mill treats the effluents internally whereas the Djupafors Mill has its effluents treated externally by the local authorities.
Important technological innovations have been put into place at our mills including the ultra filtration for the treatment of effluents containing coating at Djupafors and Blendecques.
The Djupafors Mill has now been awarded their ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 environmental certification and the La Rochette mill expects to join them in the next few months.
In september 2007, during the third seminar on the environment organised for pulp and paper mill managers of the CASCADES group, we reviewed our environmental mission. Presentations made by European mills were particularly noted for their innovative character and personnel commitment.
Our efforts will focus on the implementation of a continuous improvement plan focusing on environmental matters as regards precise objectives for each operating unit.
In addition, we shall implement an energy saving program and a new training program for all managers and employees. CASCADES Inc. commitment, as a pioneer in environmental matters, is global and relates equally to the protection of water, soil and air.
CASCADES S.A. group has invested over the last few years in environmental protection processes and equipment emanating primarily from new technologies that it has developed to optimise resource utilisation, to reduce waste at its source and to limit the consumption of energy.
